I live in the center east part of France in a city named Saint-Etienne, located closed from Lyon. Saint-Etienne a city of 175 000 inhabitants (around 320 000 with metropolitan area. This city is well known in France for her football team (A.S. Saint-Etienne). Everywhere you go in France as you said you are coming from Saint-Etienne, you will be told, "Saint-Etienne, yes Go The Greens" (colour from the team). You could meet supporters from the club everywhere in the country, this is the most popular team here.
But this city was also well known in the past for her coalmines. Factories of bicycles (a major one), factories of weapons & arms (major ones) & also metal factories constitute now main industrial activity. We have also famous market branch with Casino Group (supermarkets), Casino founder (Mr Geoffroy Guichard & Pierre Guichard) are also the founders of A.S. Saint-Etienne football team. Geoffroy Guichard is also the name of our stadium.
About tourism, closed to the city you could spend free time to big natural parks (Parc du Pilat & Parc du Livradois) very nice places if you enjoy VTT & walk. You could visit also lots of castles around the river Loire.
On 1998 our city was selected for the Football World Cup (a major sport event), on 2007 we are very proud to welcome the next Rugby World Cup. As on 1998 we will meet the Scottish Team with their famous supporters.

This football club borned on 1933 founded by Geoffroy Guichard & Pierre Guichard, the story started on 1919, but the team joined french championship (second league) on 1933.
A.S.S.E (Association Sportive de Saint-Etienne) win 10 France championships (record in France) & 6 France Cups since 1933. The 70's were the "gold years" for the club with the famous final of European Champion's Cup (now Champion's League) on 1976 in Glasgow against the Bayern Munich (final lost 1-0). We got a famous team with famous players & a famous president Mr Roger Rocher (passed away on 1997 - RIP).
Famous players joined our club : Rachid Mekloufi, Robert Herbin, Salif Keita, Aime Jacquet, Georges Carnus, Bernard Bosquier, Jean Michel Larqué, Georges Bereta, Gerard Farison, Gérard Janvion, Ivan Curkovic, Dominique Bathenay, Hervé Revelli, Johnny Rep, Oswaldo Piazza, Dominique Rocheteau, Christian Lopez, Michel Platini, Roger Milla, Lubomir Moravcik, Laurent Blanc, Willy Sagnol...
A.S.S.E is the most popular club in France, we could find supporters everywhere in France, we could find hundreds fans clubs around the country & world wide.
Our stadium is Geoffroy Guichard (36 000 seats now - 45 000 before 1998), we name it "The Green Cauldron" or "Green Hell" because of our famous supporters.
